An unpublished author contacted me recently to ask whether I could help him with some formatting of an ebook he was drafting in OpenOffice.org Writer.
I don’t know this package and I was careful to tell him so. Nevertheless I agreed to accept the assignment (part of which called for the completed document to be exported into pdf) and I set to work learning about OpenOffice.org Writer.
I must say, I found it difficult to use and have come to think of it as the word processing/online publishing equivalent of Photoshop, which people tell me takes two or three years to learn properly. Is that a fair judgment? In the end I could only do some of the work the author wanted (the web shows up many people who encountered the same problem as I did) and I am about to refund him some of my fee.
Is there anyone out there who uses OpenOffice.org Writer? If so, let me ask you: is in fact easy to use? And why should I use? I’m writing a book myself, in MS Word – should I switch to OOo?
